Who drives around with a 3,000 stall converter!? Learn how to build and engine dammit!

built 283's like to rev, that much is certain, probably why. I have 2 of them in my Chris Craft and they love being held wide open (dont talk to me about the fuel economy when doing so though)

Yeah I'm not sure if they are specifically designed to maim you in the advent of an accident or if that's just a happy coincidence.

This isn't some race car though - it's a street machine and it needs a useable stall. Ah why do I care it's not mine.

Pffttt. It needs a manual tranny to fix the lack of torque, not a higher catch-point for the torque converter.

Looks nice to me and you know what? at least its different from a standard 350 build. I'd say it moves it enough into "different" to stick out some.

I have to say I'm so glad I don't have to deal with 3 carbs though.

I did a parade with an 1,800 - it was nice and easy going, and didn't overheat at all.

Nice cog-drive alternator.

That has nothing to do with properly or improperly building an engine. It has everything to do with matching components and how he built the engine. 3 carbs, big tires and probably a lumpy cam would be a slug with no converter. 3000 stall isn't uncommon in a street car and is completely usable, particularly with large drive tires.

Either way, chances are in this case it is not built with any reasoning and isn't a high spinning machine, just another sweet feature to make it one of a kind.

I know I know, but a 3,000 is useless for street driving. I've got reasonable gears and big 33" tires and I'm hitting around 2,800 at highway speeds, which would mean with his tires and auto trans he's probably around 3,500rpm or so when he's cruising at speed. Too much racket for my tastes.

I'll check when I have access, but if I recall correctly the stall speed on a V8 equipped S197 isnt too far off from 3000 according to my owner's manual in the glove box. Online e results of the manual make no mention of it. I swear it's in there. Anyway depending on the heads and cam, that may be the right speed converter for thhat setup. I have a fox body Mercury Cougar with a heavily modified 302. Has a 2800 stall converter. 100 percent streetable. There's a saying don't fear the gear. The same holds true for stall speed.

3000 stall doesn't mean the engine will have to run to 3k to move the car, nor will it affect cruising RPM (unless it was a heavy vehicle with a low-torque engine trying to cruise at a low RPM). It's the point at which the engine will stall against the transmission and not rev higher without the tranny coming along. A light car like this won't take a lot of torque to move, and the engine probably doesn't make any either, so it's probably a good combination that makes it drive easily and likely doesn't rev up much to start moving. In a 3500lbs car, more annoying because it will flash higher. Torque converters are one of the biggest automotive mysteries that one just has to have experience with.

All that said, it seems like 90% of the time the guys putting them in do it because "that's what you do" and really have no idea what or why.

Sorry, it is hard to pass up an opportunity to cover how torque converters function relative to engine torque and vehicle weight. I'm done for now :P

Closer to 2300 - a good 3k-ish stall from Circle-D or the like will likely get you 2-3 10ths.

Just did one on a Procharged stock-cammed 3v and ran it back-to-back on the dyno before and after, .230 difference. On the strip the next day it dropped 2/10ths also with no other changes.

I know someone who did with a home-built chain deal he was really proud of at the time. Ugh. Took a bad wreck to another level and never the same since.

I'm still running the stocker in mine. Flash stalls anywhere between 2800-3200 depending on pavement or track conditions.....mind you the car has 3.73s, a 28 inch tall tire and a Whipple supercharger. The converter is next for me. I'm at a point where it's the most bang for the buck and throwing more boost at it is a diminished return until the converter goes in. Now I REALLY wanna see what the manual says.

Flashes higher because it's driving through it. It would be interesting to see if the manual does list a spec. You'll see an improvement with a converter. Cams if you haven't done them yet...
